I wonder if your Dad spent that first night there as well? He would remember because a tank ran over a beer keg that had fallen off a truck and a bunch of the guys managed to find some some mugs and make sure it didn't go to waste. The parallels in our father's stories are amazing. An 18 year old student in an eye glass factory in Budapest on the day of the revolution, he found himself a freedom fighter before escaping across the border to a refuge camp in Austria. It was there, with five cigarettes a day in his ration kit, that he got himself hooked on tobacco for close to 20 years. He also found his way to Canada, working as a labourer under terrible conditions for a few years before finding more permanent employment in an Aluminium smelter in Kitimat, BC. We lost him this year after a long battle with diabetes. Preparing for the funeral brought back many of the old stories and many of his old friends. Those Hungarians are an amazing lot.
