Second Life is completely pathetic, and everyone who seriously uses it should die a hideously painful death

"Don’t you already do this in The Sims?"

Nope

"There’s a few people I know who would spend the entire day online making sure their house was spotless and everything was ready for a virtual date, meanwhile in “RL”, they are disgusting slobs."

Exactly why I think it would be darn strange if not pathetic. I have a different line in the sand.

>>I hate to say it [especially here] but I DO think that doing some things >>virtually would be pathetic or at least darn strange. Logging onto Third Life >>and spending 1/2 hour manipulating your avatar washing dishes in your >>virtual abode comes to mind.

Don't you already do this in The Sims?

There's a few people I know who would spend the entire day online making sure their house was spotless and everything was ready for a virtual date, meanwhile in "RL", they are disgusting slobs. *shrug*

In my books, the only time one ventures near the "pathetic" line in the sand, is when one reputation grinds 24/7 for 6 months just to get a +1 sword.

There seems to be a sort of unwritten law that VW's should be designed to last forever. Maybe that combined with a trick of perception (e.g. it's far easier to think of MUDs that are still around than to think of ones that aren't even though they're outnumbered by lots) is what accounts for that fallacy.

On the other hand, the only argument against immortal worlds I can recall is from The Matrix 3 (in order to last forever, it had to be built to reset; along with the illusion of it being the users choice as a requirement, no less).

So it's going to take a much better movie than that...

As an aside, I think it's a (common) fallacy that most virtual worlds and MMOs will never completely die. Historically, most of them have and I'm not sure why that wouldn't continue to be the case.

For a long time I've been calling Second Life the Apple Newton of open, virtual worlds. They're ahead of their time, but their use experience is broken and they're ill-equipped to succeed long term.

Like most virtual worlds or MMOs, SL will never completely die. But the momentum has shifted away from SL and to sexier, easier-to-use startups unburdened by legacy code, legal issues and a poor user experience.
