There’s a wealth of media coming up that I’m looking forward to, and it feels like a joyful consolation for summer moving towards a close (though it stays summery here until mid to late October typically). In no particular order: Real Time With Bill Mahrer. It’s awesome that his first night back is tomorrow night, the […]

I love this. One of our environmental artists at Sparkplay got married recently and he and his girlfriend decided to create a videogame themed-wedding. They entered the outdoor wedding to the Halo theme, their cake involved Han, Leia, and Ewoks, and each table was themed after a different game, with each guest getting a unique […]

I lost most of my respect for Bill Clinton quite awhile ago, but the speech he gave tonight at the Democratic National Convention, following on Hillary’s excellent speech last night, was awesome and he earned some of it back very quickly. By nature, I’m not really a “joiner.” I dislike political parties, and have major reservations […]

Star Wars has a long history in the MMO genre. I’m not actually sure what the first Star Wars MMO was, but there were/are multiple Star Wars-themed text-based MMOs (also called MUDs for those of you just tuning in) going back to the early 90s. In 2003, of course, Star Wars: Galaxies was released and […]

This really is a silly issue. They made a game in poor taste and got dropped from a competition because of it. Is this really worth protesting over? Is their freedom of speech or whatever actually infringed upon? Would all these people be dropping out of Slamdance if the SCMRPG was never a participant? They might just be using this as an excuse to bow out. Did the games being pulled out stand a good chance of winning, or was there nothing to lose?
If you have the ability to make anything you want, but decide to produce something that could potentially piss off thousands, you will get your just desserts.

I know the first person who dropped out (Jonathan Blow) and talked to him about dropping out before he did it. I know exactly why he did it and there’s no dishonesty on his part.
The point is not that it’s censorship. It’s not. The point is that the competition itself had already decided SCMRPG was worthwhile. They had already made it a finalist! Removing them at that point makes Slamdance a bit of a joke as far as integrity goes.

They shouldn’t have made in a finalist in the first place, but since they did, I’m glad they took it out later. It would have been better if it wasn’t just because the sponsors pressured them, but I think kicking out SCMRPG was the right thing to do.

The point really is not whether they should or should not have kicked out SCMRPG!, but rather whether they can honestly be taken seriously as an entity after having first accepted the game, to the point of having it become a finalist for a period of time, and then caving to corporate pressure in removing it from the competition ex post facto. They should have not allowed it to begin with, or kept it in the whole time. This was the worst way they could have handled the situation.
