I’ve
always been somewhat dubious, as a player, about the 360’s Gamer Score paradigm. The temptation is to assess it as completely meaningless given that having a higher Gamer Score gets you absolutely nothing tangible but a higher Gamer Score. In one sense of course, it is meaningless. One gets nothing that can be tangibly measured from increasing one’s Gamer Score. You don’t get more powerful in Gears of War. You don’t unlock more animals in Viva Pinata. You get nothing.
And yet it completely transforms the experience I get playing ranked Gears of War matches, for instance, on Xbox Live. I am not even sure I’d still be playing ranked matches at all if it weren’t for the fact that I want at least one goddam GoW achievement that one gets by killing 100 other players in ranked matches with a particular weapon. I find myself not wanting to use anything but the main machine gun, the chainsaw, and the shotgun, as those represent the vast majority of my kills, and using any other weapon represents a barrier to my “progress.”
Even more extreme, one frequently (as in virtually every game) encounters players who are pretty clearly looking to get those 100 kills with a particular weapon. You can spot them a mile off. It’s the guy who uses the sniper rifle no matter if the enemy is standing right next to him, or the guy who only uses the frag grenades to tag opponents. (And yes, it’s always a guy. I have yet to hear a female voice on Gears of War.) Tonight one fellow on the opposing team just rushed straight at us repeatedly with grenades armed, and died repeatedly. He explained he didn’t care if he died because he only needed to get a few more kills to get his Achievement.
If you ask me most days what I think of Xbox Live Achievements, I’ll tell you that I think they’re a brilliant idea but that I would never get sucked into such a pointless race. If you asked me today what I thought of Xbox Live Achievements, I’d probably tell you to please ask me again tomorrow because I’m pretty close to 100 kills with a shotgun.
As a foonote, I find my lack of skill at Gears of War comically apalling. I have played 477 rounds. I’ve won 151 of them, and lost 318 of them. Worse, those rounds were part of 44 matches in which my side only won 9!

When I was following the Xbox 360 before its release, the achievement system was regarded with skepticism by many gamers, but I thought it a brilliant idea. A year later, I’m still going the extra mile to get those pesky achievements (I did with Prey what you’re doing with GoW), and I’m loving it the whole time (just broke four thousand). They’re almost like honors quests in IRE games!

Are you able to see your rounds played, rounds won, etc., somewhere on the 360? I just got one (I’m even worse than you are at GoW), so I haven’t fully checked it out yet.
Gamer Score gets you bragging rights, though, doesn’t it? I’m sure people size each other up by their big swinging Gamer Scores. Which is a bit unfair, since there are all kinds of ways to earn points. The reputation system is also totally meaningless and misleading.

Yes you can indeed Mark.
Go to Versus -> Leaderboards and then select ‘me’ as the person you want to see. Hit ‘a’ (I think, I don’t have it on right now) to bring up more info about you, and then ‘y’ to bring up details about you. It’ll give you all sorts of info (though NOT, I might add, the info that lets me know how many more shotgun kills I need to get my damn Achievement!)
I guess Gamer Score gets you bragging rights in theory at least. I’ve never heard anyone brag about his or her Gamer Score and I’m not aware of the Gamer Score of anyone but a couple friends I play online with.
People just like ladders they can climb I think.

“People just like ladders they can climb I think.”
Indeed. They especially like ladders on which they can compare themselves to other people’s positions. That’s really all I had in mind with the phrase “bragging rights.”

Personally I allow myself to get sucked into Achievements for precisely that reason - I find myself often growing bored of games too quickly, and it’s always been a problem for me. With Achievements, I fool myself into working at it until I can get another one, but what I’m actually doing is using a semi-external incentive to make myself continue to play the game, and I have often had new life breathed into my 360 games this way.

“I have a score”
Uh, Great.
“I have a score I can compare”
Interesting.
It’s one reason Laser Squad Nemesis appealed to me, for example. ELO rankings are a VERY good way of tracking these things.

I’m glad to hear that someone is as appalling as me at GoW! I’ve practically been yelled at on ranked matches for my lousiness. This sucks of course because I reeeeeeeally want those achievements.
Additionally, I find myself losing interest in games that are fun, but that present achievements so difficult to fulfill that I lose that extra incentive to keep coming back (FIFA 07, I’m looking at you) once the initial joy of playing a new-but-non-addicting game is gone.
Seriously, achievements might be the best thing to come along for video games in a long time. It’s the same thing that keeps me playing the trivia game on the touch screen game at the local bar — I want to break the top!

Dear Matt….I quess you havent run into me yet…LadyofLedger, I’m the one girl that plays Gears!! There is at least one of us. While I’m still trying to get my Act 1 on Casual, I LOVE the matches….as an accountant, if I visualize pesky little IRS agents as the Locust hordes, man it is fun blowin’ those guys away….nothing personal of course. just kidding about the irs. Anyway, I have just experienced the lure of the sniper rifle and intend to try to pick it up in the next match before some other player gets to it!

Wow, no, indeed I have not run into you, but I will look for you!
Your handle is chuckle-worthy, as an accountant.

ok guys, with (a little) help from a friend and perserverence, I’ve finished thru Act 4 casual, a MAJOR achievement for a newbie, gun oblivious girl? I’ve asked 40 times, “which one is the shotgun?” - I do love that sniper. Anyway, those acheivements keep me going. Having delusions of getting thru hardcore. (oh and trust me, in the circle I’ve managed to weasle into, there is a definite bragging rights ritual going on)….an acquaintance on my friends list hit 10,000 kills….that is spending entirely too long on xbox live! But hey, he has all the achievements!! LOL

I have to say I cannot imagine hitting 10,000 online kills. I’m somewhere around 500 I think. I suppose if you’re the sort who can get 20+ kills per match it wouldn’t take as long, but I sometimes get like 3 or 4.

Unfortunately, there is no achievement for 100 kills with the shotgun… I just got to 2,000 total kills, and i guarantee that half of them were with my shotgun. That gun totally rips through enemy bodies like a hot knife in butter. It makes me chuckle. You guys should play with me, amy and matt. I can help you guys get ur skills up in un ranked matches
the gamertag is monkeyfcoconut (add me)

I realized there was no shotgun achievement after I got to around 500 kills and couldn’t figure out why I hadn’t gotten the shotgun achievement yet. I did get the Chainsaw achievement but I think I’m probably done with GoW aside from friendly matches with friends. Onto R6!

I just got 10,000 ranked match warzone kills, no glitching, quitting early or anything else and got no achievement. I was going to glitch my achievement beause I’d already done the 10,000 kills legit…. only to find out the update this morning fixed the glitch.
Fuck you MS. Fuck you in your aids ridden face you technology nazis.
