Consider this an official unofficial announcement that our in-development graphical game is called Earth Eternal. I had to announce the name in order to get the help of some of our players in deciding which logo is most appealing to the broad audience of people who like fantasy RPGs. For the sake of reference, here are the logo ideas we’ve been working with. We’ve had three rounds of revisions so far. I appreciate any feedback people have on the logos, as while I know which ones I like, my tastes may or may not correlate with a wider audience.
Keep in mind, please, that these are all just concept sheets. Colors can be changed, compression artifacts won’t be there, etc. The first set gave me the text part of the logo, but I didn’t like anything else about the First Round. I’m a big fan of style of the text logo on the upper left.
Next came this sheet as the Second Round

I’ll comment on these after the Third Round, which was here:

So, my favorite is the lower left one in the 3rd Round and, if a dark background is required, the upper left of the third round. They’re simple, memorable, and clean, though I liked #10 in Round 2, I felt it was too sci-fi. One person I showed it to commented that it looked Klingon. Earth Eternal is resolutely rooted in fantasy, albeit with vague real-world references.
I showed them to the Achaea forum dwellers, and to my surprise, a number of them commented that they thought the logo looked like a shampoo or bath soap logo! That was a welcome wake-up slap in the face: I have been looking at too many ‘Web 2.0′ (I loathe that term) sites and I have to admit that I’m attracted to their generally clean logos.
Because the reaction of the Achaea players was so neutral to negative overall, I showed them Round Two and asked them what they thought. #10 and #11 were the clear winners. A lot of people had very positive reactions to those, both on Achaea’s forums and on Imperian’s forums (which had little traffic on the topic by comparison, because it’s a smaller game and because those players don’t have nearly as much of a personal relationship with me as some of the Achaea players do. I used to run Achaea day-to-day, but I never ran Imperian day-to-day.
So, I’m having the artist do variations on both my preference (the simple, leafy upper left and lower left in Round Three), and on #10 in Round Two, but with the removal of the silvery weapony-looking object behind the logo, and the substitution of something more nature-y, such as the three-pronged leaf or the fern on the leafy logos in Round Three.
Any impressions are welcome.

Call me a tree-hugger but I like the top right hand corner leaf of the #1 series.
The green fade over the earth doesn’t work at all, though.
I don’t know what the theme of the game is but the #10 logo reads to me in the same way as most sci-fi shooters originating from US. There’s something about the sharp pointy bits that tells me a game with this logo is a Quake mod.

Random comments:
a) Look at the logos of all the MMORPGs that you WON’T be like, and make sure your logo DOESN’T look anything like their logos.
b) Round 3 logos implies the game is about saving trees, ferns in particular. This might be the case.
c) Two roundish leaves attached to a stem, and pointing away from one another, could be used to create an infinity sign.

Sulka: Well, the game has some nature-y overtones, so the problem with #10 is largely that tall silvery thing behind the words. We’re asking the artist to remove that and replace it with something more nature-esque.
Mike: I think one could probably do worse than being mistaken for World of Warcraft.
Still, that’s not the audience we’re going for. #9 on the Second Round reminded me strongly of WoW and was summarily rejected for that reason. Thanks for the suggestions! The infinity sign is an interesting one.

If ya go with #10 from round 2 why not use the #5 from round 2 behind the text instead of the silver daggerlike item?

Maybe it’s just me, but a lot of the logos made me think of Final Fantasy… might just be the font of the text.

Take 10, expand the background diamond to encapsulate the entire text and then take your blended leaf from set 3 number 1 and place it behind the text within the diamond. Or as someone mentioned set 2 number 5 would be a nice substitution for the Klingon scary axe symbol.
I know it’s a longshot, but any sort of random guess at a hoped for release year?

Sorry Edward, but the name is about all we’re prepared to talk about at this point.

I’ll agree that nice, simple, clean logos (and webistes for that matter) are the way to go. The less clutter the better. But the logos (and everytime I type logos now, I think it should be capitalized, thanks Matt…) in the third round just don’t ’say’ anything to me. I worked for years as an editor in publishing, specifically fantasy and science fiction novels. Having the art department come up with something unique and appropriate was always difficult.
I know you don’t want to talk content, but with only knowing the name, it’s not easy to say if it’s a good logo or not. No way to tell how representative it is or what else could possbily be done.
I will say that I think you’re moving in the right direction, esthetically, compared to the earlier rounds. But the logo needs more ‘umph’…a touch more drama. I mean, that’s what we’re looking for when we play.

Out of sheer curiosity, what exactly is this game about?

Matt
It’s a fantasy MUD (or MMORPG if you prefer).

Matt’s being evil and trying to suck me into Achaea, Midkemia Online and Earth Eternal. Woe is me.

The logo’s with the earth in the first round remind me of the last Civilisation game a bit too much, the best one in that round is the one with the leaf. For round two I’d go with 8. 10 does indeed have a SciFi look and 11 (forgive me) reminds me of a tombstone. In round three Upper Left or Lower right, the latter because of the pyramid included (ok, so I like pyramids, mock me).
My winners would be 8 in round two, upper left in round three.

Riashain, you know we are both under his spell now. The question really is whether there will ever be an IRE game we won’t play at least once.
As for the pics, I really liked number 3 in the second round. Not too assuming and a rustic look for the nature feel.

First Round:
Love the leaf, though the shading around the earth might be a little less differentiated. Also, you could make it as though the earth were growing out of the leaf instead of simply stuck through it. This is probably my favorite. I’d suggest, lastly, superimposing the text over the leaf-world so that the text doesn’t quite reach the edge of the leaf on any side.
Second round:
3/8 Nice for a barren world mud.
11 Nice if the world is all about growing things…
