Will Runescape break 1 million subscribers?

As you know, popularity does not necessarily relate to quality. I think the big lessons from Runescape is that ease of accessibility (browser-based client, free gameplay options) and patience (it took a long time, in MMORPG terms, before Runescape got big) go a long way, even further than having a huge license or “immersive” graphics.

And marketing, can’t leave that one out.

Unfortunately, I don’t get runescape either. I can imagine that in my early teens I would have found it compelling because (a) I didn’t get tired of grindy tasks as much (aka: wizardry 1 and Ultima 1), and (b) I didn’t have much money. However, I’ve talked to intelligent adults who like it, so it isn’t just attractive to teenagers, and it isn’t just about low-cost.

I can identify two things they did well: The easy entry (low download size) and gradual user ramp-up, as has already been mentioned. The Java-based app may also pull in a larger percentage of Mac/Linux users than other MMORPGs can.

I expected Guildwars (no monthly fee) to put a dent in runscape, but it didn’t. Well, it may have slowed it down, since GW came out at the end of Q1 2005 (as I recall), right where Runescape’s google hits seems to have temporarily plateaud.

WELL… every1 thinks runescape in not worth-a-while game. many people have compared it to other MMORPGs like warcraft and say it is just not nice. but i feel that those different types of skills make it good. one more thing… the worst thing in runescape ever is the banning system. you could have commited an offence (the same offence) in the same time, in the same day and still get banned permenantly. it might be a mistake or something but thier mods dont have the time read what you tell them especially if you are a non-member so they just deny your query. !?!?!?!? is not that unfair ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Interestingly, until I blocked comments on one of my Runescape entries, I used to get Runescape customer support requests on my blog!

(Also, because of the topic of my blog, endless, very specific cheat and exploit offers… which I tried to contact the RS guys about and got nowhere).

I actually left some of them up, appropriately sanitized, of course, as warnings.

I too have found RuneScape to be a very fun Game. Now, I can’t say that it is the best game out there, as understandably, I have not played all the games out there.

But I agree, RuneScape may not have the best Graphics, or the most intuitive interfaces, but it is an engaging and interesting game.

I feel that the Gowers and their Team at JaGeX can still improve upon their Game, but they should be careful about it. At this time, they are in the limelight, but they cannot let that go to their haeds. They should not drasticaly change how their game looks or works at all. They have a Very good game right now, and, as of late, they have been doing some Grapical “Upgrades.” Some, I feel, just do not work well at all with the game. Such as the change of the Greater Demon’s appearance. It just does not look good at all…It looks either (1) Too Corny, (2) Too Gaudy, or (3) like it belongs in different Game. They NEED to avoid these kinds of mishaps.

PS: Also, I do understand *Why* they are doing it, but seriously, I feel they should release Something worthwhile for the F2Pers once in a while. even if they are only releasing Members stuff for the reason of getting more subscriptions, they need to release something [more than an Item or two,] that would keep those F2Pers who are unsure of Membership, engaged in the game. For some, it can get a touch boring after a bit…

I think you would find that most Runescape players don’t fit the demographic of cutting edge, skilled, twenty-something RPGers.

Very likely many are school aged children or even older folks who aren’t interested in the blood=thirsty competitiveness of, say WoW… and there are many of us. As an example, I am 63 and retired.

As for banning some players, the Gowers ARE protecting their members by preserving a more friendly cultural environment. Okay?

I think runescape will contiue to grow and more and more people will join its addictive atmosphire. I may be a youngster compaired to say, Robert, but i played runescape at least once a week for 64 weeks! I knew about WoW and its superior grapics, and GW and its free game play, but it was that runescape hooks you from the very begining. the tiem that u save for, the quest that you toile over, the level that you strive for! runescapes addicting and pleasent gameplay will see it succes well into the future.

Runcape should turn into more of a wow (world of warcrafft) game, and will recive as wow did 8.5 million suscribers. Then if you had a free choise they will be the new most popular game! With a lest 9 million players and £30mil a day!

I saw a news announcement that it broke 1 million subscribers today.

daeko2 is making the price of a membership sound to much. It’s only $5.00 a month! also lanar falcon is crazy if he thinks that runescape should be like wow(world of worcraft) i’ve been on wow before and it isn’t addicting at all. i was on for 3 days and i got bored of it. For one, currently, there are a minimum of One Million unique Member Accounts, as of May ‘07. Realize, this may not signify -Active- Accounts,
Also, there are approximately 10 Million unique Free Accounts.

Wow. It has been almost a Year since I posted above. And so Much has change since then. For one, Jagex has released many more Graphical Updates (not all for the best - still my opinion), the site I was apart of, Misthalin, has Shut-down due to Financial Struggles, rumors of a New Jagex Game have been Circulating, among much, much more.

I am still playing, Same old Account. I cannot wait to see what Jagex has in store for us. Hopefully it is worth the waiting for…
