I'm probably going to get ridiculed here, but I still consider the first Conan one of my all-time favourite movies. I watched it opening night with my father when I was... 11? and I may well decide to do it again tomorrow. It is an unapologetic epic... it never smirks at itself... and yet its melodrama does not become self-indulgent. In that way, I feel they followed the books closer than they get credit for.

I wanted a Conan III with an aged king and a troubled brow, but I don't suppose that's happening now. And I don't think Arnold suffers direction anymore, anyway.

Hey now, Gandalf did some mean work with that sword of his, in the movies at least. He was a bit of of a two-handed terror in fact, PLUS he sported stylish robes (not silk, but still, pretty nice looking robes).

There's been a big push for Conan for a couple years now. They've recently rereleased collections of all of Robert E. Howard's stories (including Bran Mak Morn and Solomon Kane) - which is great because I never read the stories before, there's Funcom's MMORPG, a couple new series taking place in the "Age of Conan" universe, a new movie, Mongoose's new pen and paper Conan game, a new comic series (written by some big wig, I forget who), and I think a boardgame.

Pretty much the entire geek spectrum has been attacked by Conan recently. But hey, that's okay with me - geeks have become to Gandalfy these days. We need to remind them that big sweaty men with impossibly large metal weapons still kick ass, and frail old farts that shoot sparkles from their phallic sticks are the masculine power fantasies of weenies. Seriously, it's about time a MMORPG recognized that a guy in full platemail and two glowing, flaming axes should do more than sit there and take it while the guy in the bathrobe does all the work with his magic missiles.

Man, I freaking hate wizards...
